KNIGHT NOSTALGIA RELEASES FEBRUARY 15!
Happy New Year, everyone! Hope you're all enjoying 2018 so far and will have the pleasure of many great reads this year. Are you ready to spend time with the Knights again? Well, we have a release date - FEBRUARY 15! The day after Valentine's, which seems very appropriate (grin). We also have a cover, full length excerpt and pre-order links for you! Just click here. The full length excerpt is a continuation of that little snippet I gave you last newsletter from the first story, Conqueror's Fantasy. Just as a reminder, Knight Nostalgia is a three-novella anthology of Knights of the Board Room series "revisits."
As we move toward the February 15 release date, the ladies at the Joey W Hill Members Only Facebook Page and I will be running all sorts of fun teaser pics, snippets, giveaways and more related to the book, so if you're not a member, definitely come join us! For those of you who haven't read the series, this is a great time to catch up, because you'll definitely get more out of the anthology if you know the stories of our Knights and their ladies.
DID YOU READ THE CHRISTMAS STORY?
You didn't? Well, now's a great time, to stave off the post-Christmas doldrums. I wrote "Christmas Past, Christmas Future" for Literary Escapism's Black Friday event, a Thanksgiving-through-Christmas series where they invite authors to submit holiday shorts that re-visit some of their favorite characters. It was released on December 15, and featured Cai and Rand of Vampire's Soul as they share a special Christmas moment at the mall (yes, you know I love my malls). here's the direct link, but be sure and flip through the posts all during that time period to enjoy the almost daily contributions by a wealth of wonderful authors. It'll keep that Christmas spirit going!
And if you haven't read Cai and Rand's full length story, Vampire's Soul, you can find excerpt (both written and audio, read by me), blurb, buy links and book trailer on the website book page. If you're new to the Vampire Queen series, some familiarity with the world would probably be good, like perhaps the first two books, or the standalone book 4, Beloved Vampire.
HOLIDAY CHARITY GIVEAWAY
Thank you so much to all the people who sent in a charity suggestion for my $50-donation giveaway. The randomly chosen winner was Taffy, and her charity choice was the Salvation Army. I was delighted, because the SA is one of my favorite charities as well. However, I was thankful for my random number generator, because it would have been too hard to choose among all the great organizations that were suggested. Here were the other ones, in case you're looking for a place to offer help: Guiding Eyes for the Blind, Heifer International, Halo Animal Rescue, The Trevor Project, Katie Cobb Donation Fund, Alzheimer's Association, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, National Coalition for Sexual Freedom (yeah!), St. Jude, Rainbow House Children's Resource Center, Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital, and the Humane Society of the United States. Thank you also for the personal notes some of you included. Hearing why you donate to certain organizations, whether it's motivated by a family member affected by an illness, or your awareness about a certain sector of the world that needs help, makes me realize anew how wonderful my readers are! And this year, a couple of the suggestions weren't for formal organizations, but toward simple community efforts to help others, like the local nursing home or a family who had lost their fourteen-year-old daughter to non-Hodgkins lymphoma. So thank you all, for looking out for others. "No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted." One of my favorite Aesop quotes. And I particularly like the PSA commercials this year from State Farm and #Neighborhood Good, encouraging people to volunteer and remember that there are those in need all year long, not just at the holidays. It reminds me how kind people can be.
2018 CONFERENCES - WILL I SEE YOU IN NORFOLK OR CHICAGO?
Do you have your registration and hotel reservations for the July 6-7, 2018 Sexy and Sassy Signing event in Norfolk? If you're going, don't delay doing that, because the hotel block is already sold out, which means the hotel can choose not to offer the conference rate to new bookings at any time! Go to the site link NOW to make your reservations. You can find out who else is going--more authors are being added all the time--and what types of events are happening, including the public signing. I'd love to see you all there! There's also an anthology for sale from some of the participating authors, the proceeds of which are benefitting VETSports.
And though my second conference of the year, the RWA Chicago Spring Fling (April 20-21), is an author industry event, there is a public signing, so if you're in the area, plan on coming to see us all there. If you're attending the conference, I'll be hosting the Hot Night Critiques event! I'm also collecting premium swag for 75 attendee bags, so contact me at storywitch@PROTECTED if you're an author who'd like to send books or items for those (you don't have to be an attendee).
NOTE: In the last newsletter, I mistakenly listed the dates for SASS18 as April 20-21, which are the dates for the Chicago Spring Fling. So sorry for that confusion! The dates have remained correct throughout in the newsletter sidebar.
CHANGE, DOUBT AND A NEW YEAR
My husband and I will be moving back to our beloved coast in 2018, because we realized we miss it too much, and it makes no sense for us to wait to be where we know we're meant to be. It took some struggle and worry to reach that decision, but the lessons of change and doubt I've learned from the writing process helped. Want to read how? It's the subject of my latest GoodReads blog post. Here's hoping I'll be sending this newsletter from the coast before too many more months pass!
WHAT'S THE NEXT BOOK?
So that topic leads into this one. For the first time in a very long time, I don't have a definitive answer to that question. Over the next several months, we'll be preparing our home for sale, and planning where we're going to move, evaluating employment options, etc. I also need to review the manuscripts for Something About Witches and In the Company of Witches, the two books of the Arcane Shot series, and see if I can get those back out to you all as self-published works. On top of that, I want to increase my efforts to secure back some of the rights to my other works and take those in the right direction.
I AM working on a couple things, but am not at the point yet I'm comfortable announcing one of them as the next book. I don't want to disappoint anyone if it ends up being just a chapter or two, and then the muse turns me toward something else entirely. What I'm playing with, however, is penning a novella or two during this personal transition period to bring closure to some characters who've been waiting a long time to get a story.
I also have a Vampire Queen series standalone percolating with another author. As you know, I rarely if ever do any co-authoring. The lovely Desiree Holt is the only one to date, with Quinn and Selene of Nightfall. However, this other author is probably the only additional one with whom I'd consider writing a story, and she has approached me about it. The reason I co-author so rarely isn't just because of my preferences as a solo author--I value my friendships with my fellow authors, and I am extremely controlling in my writing process, very determined about how I want a story to sound. If I was another author, I wouldn't put up with me, lol. We'll see how it all works out. I hope to have something to announce to you on that when this author and I get our ducks in a row.
So, for the first time in a VERY long time, I don't have anything to announce on the front burner...yet. Hopefully that will change in the next couple months, and I appreciate your patience as we try and figure out which way our lives are going. The only inevitable thing in life is change...and the chaos that goes with it!
CONTACTING ME - Remember, you can find me online through my website email contact link or email me directly at storywitch@PROTECTED. You can also leave a question for me under my Author Profile on GoodReads. I'm on Facebook under Joey W. Hill, and @JoeyWHill on Twitter. My Pinterest boards related to the books are here.
Thank you all so much for your support of my work!
DIDN'T GET A RESPONSE? It seems those darn online filters are becoming more and more aggressive. And don't get me started on the many ways Facebook plays tricks with my messages, lol. But responding to my readers, and doing so in a very timely manner (within 24-48 hours), is extremely important to me. So if you have sent a communication to me in any of the mediums I've mentioned - direct email, FB, GoodReads or Twitter - and have not received a response, a technical glitch has occurred. Either your communication did not get through to me, or my response did not reach you. If you suspect that's the case, use one of the alternative communication methods to send me a "Hey, Joey, I sent you a note through email (or FB, or a tweet, etc). Did you get it?" message, and we'll make sure we sort it out. I will never intentionally ignore my readers!
While you can subscribe to the newsletter through my website, you may find your email host isn't letting it through, thanks to broad spam-blocking mechanisms that don't separate communications you've specifically requested to receive from those you haven't. Regrettably, there's not a lot we can do on this side if the newsletter is hitting an email filter that is bouncing it without notifying either one of us. However, we do have some things you can try that seem to have worked for folks:
FIRST - make sure the newsletter email is part of your contact list: "newsletter@PROTECTED."
SECOND - Check whatever filters you do have for spam and the like and see what methods are available to you to ensure an email like this gets through. My newsletters have a plethora of links in them to make it easy for you to find the things I'm talking about, but the flip side of that is it can get the newsletter tagged pretty quickly as spam.
THIRD - Contact me at newsletter@PROTECTED and ask to be unsubscribed. Once we confirm with you that has been done, rather than us sending you an invitation (which can bounce for the aforementioned reasons), we have you go in to the website newsletter link and subscribe yourself - here's the link to that. If it works, you'll get an automatic invitation to confirm, and then, fingers crossed, you should be set.
FOURTH - If none of this works or all of it is just too frustrating and you want to say "screw it!" (and I can hardly blame you, lol), then just make sure you've liked my FB page or are following me on Twitter. This is because EVERY MONTH I will post the latest newsletter link on both of those, to make sure it reaches the widest number of people possible! It's the same link monthly, so if you want, just put http://storywitch.com/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/archive/storywitchnews/newest/ as one of your Favorites. You can click on it anytime to see if an update has been posted. I post a new one every 30-45 days, give or take a few days.
