IT'S HERE! KNIGHT NOSTALGIA RELEASES FEBRUARY 15!
Okay, the time is upon us. The Knights of the Board Room are back! Knight Nostalgia releases February 15, the day after Valentine's Day. This three-novella anthology is a compendium of new Knights of the Board Room series "revisits." Click this Knight Nostalgia link to go to all the pre-order/buy links, including print and ebook. There's also an excerpt from the first story in the book, Conqueror's Fantasy, Matt and Savannah's revisit. Nook will go live on release day (hopefully), since we don't have pre-order privileges with them. Toeheads, lol.
So how are we celebrating? We have several things happening where you can join the fun!
GRAND PRIZE GIVEAWAY! - If you haven't already heard about it, I'm running a "KBR meme war" on both my Joey W. Hill Author page and the Members Only page on Facebook (click on those links to go right to that specific post). You can find the perfect meme that speaks to you about the Knights of the Board Room, create your own, or, if you don't know how to create a meme, simply post your chosen picture and put your caption in the comments. To see the prize post and what people have posted so far, just click on those links. Even if you don't enter the contest, it's tons of fun to look at what others have done.
And what's the grand prize? A full complement of Knights of the Board room swag, an Amazon gift certificate, a signed copy of Knight Nostalgia (or the book of your choice) AND a lovely pendant based on the one Marcie wears in Hostile Takeover. I had initially listed the closing date of the contest as the end of the release day party, but since I'm running late on the newsletter, I'm extending the date through the end of the weekend, February 18! I'll announce the winner February 19.
RELEASE DAY PARTY! - So that leads to the next fun thing. On FEB 15, From 9am-9pm ET on the the Members Only page on Facebook, we'll be running an all day release day party for Knight Nostalgia. The admins have come up with so many fun games and things to do, and I'll be posting throughout the day as well. So come celebrate with us!
HOW DID THE KNIGHTS OF THE BOARD ROOM HAPPEN? - On March 3, I'll be a guest on the wonderful Desiree Holt's blog, talking about how the series was born, and other "behind the scenes" info about it.
Hope you all will enjoy these events, and I of course particularly hope you'll enjoy the anthology! It was a lot of fun to spend time with the Knights again.
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON NEXT?
Last month I didn't have a clear answer to that question. We have a lot of transition happening, and it's accelerating fast. My husband and I have purchased a house at the coast, and will likely be moving us and our menagerie there over the next couple months. Once there, I'll be seeking further employment to supplement the writing income. HOWEVER, while I know that will curtail my writing time somewhat, my sanity (such that it is) rests a great deal on the ability to write at least a couple books a year. So I expect I'll be able to make that happen...especially now that the muse has struck and I've started TWO projects!
Writing the Knight Nostalgia anthology made me think about secondary characters in my Vampire Queen series that either 1) have waited FOREVER to have their story told or 2) have a story to tell, but maybe not a full-length one. Two pairs of characters in particularly caught my attention (and the muse's) in this regard. The first is...drum roll...Alistair and Nina! These two were first introduced in Vampire's Claim, Lady Danny and Dev's story. I've had a rough outline of their story for some time, but some essential spark, a good opening, a deeper avenue into who they are, was missing. However, a few weeks ago, it came to me, and I started handwriting that opening in one of my notebooks. The story has been gaining momentum ever since. It's going to open during WWII, where Nina is a nurse. Her first encounter with Alistair, the vampire to whom her twin sister is promised as an Inherited Servant, happens at a field hospital. The scene practically wrote itself, which is always thrilling to me, because when an author feels that "groove," we know we're on the right track.
The second story involves newer characters, but they're clamoring for their own story just as loudly. Wolf is a vampire Dom at Club Atlantis, who made his first appearance in the recent Vampire's Soul. He was only in one scene toward the end of the book, but he made a very large impression, lol. (No, you naughty minded people, that wasn't a sexual innuendo. Okay, okay, it wasn't ONLY a sexual innuendo.) There is a submissive on staff at Club Atlantis, Ella. For a long time, I thought she and James, the head of Atlantis security, would end up being a couple, but James has made his decision, and it's Ellen (a character from the Nature of Desire series book Rough Canvas, and she is also in Unrestrained, as Athena's secretary). They'll meet when James takes a much needed vacation to New Orleans. And it's when James is on that vacation that Wolf and Ella's story takes off, because Gideon is up to his eyeballs handling James's security duties, and Wolf ends up being the Dom keeping an extra eye on Ella, since she has a tendency to get in trouble.
Now, whether Alistair/Nina and Wolf/Ella will be a two-story anthology, or they'll each be full length, is still to be determined. Right now I'm writing them as a two-book anthology, but if their length grows beyond that, I'll break them up.
So what's the second project? In the last newsletter, I also mentioned I have a Vampire Queen series standalone percolating with another author. That author is VJ Summers! VJ is an incredibly talented person who has been on a bit of a writing hiatus for awhile, but I'm very happy she's getting back into it. I have every book of hers either on my e-reader or on my shelf. We have the first chapter written, and we're seeing how fast we'll move forward before we start releasing more details, but the book is definitely happening. As you know, I rarely if ever do any co-authoring. The lovely Desiree Holt is the only one to date, with Quinn and Selene of Nightfall. However, VJ is probably the only other one with whom I'd consider writing a story, so when she approached me about it, I said yes. The reason I co-author so rarely isn't just because of my preferences as a solo author--I value my friendships with my fellow authors, and I am extremely controlling in my writing process, very determined about how I want a story to sound. If I was another author, I wouldn't put up with me, lol.
So that's what I'll be working on in the coming months. After that, I may do another two-story anthology offering for the Nature of Desire series, probably Rory/Daralyn (also secondary characters from Rough Canvas and another couple who has waited a LONG time for a story) and James/Ellen. Though James/Ellen will have a bit of vampire crossover touch, since James has vampires in his "family," I feel like their storyline best fits in the Nature of Desire series. But the vampire elements will be fun. I already have written a couple scenes where Anwyn, who has second-marked James, is trying to give him dating advice in his head while he's talking to Ellen, lol.
Hope those stories are something you all can be excited about! I think they're going to be a pleasure to write.
2018 CONFERENCES - WILL I SEE YOU IN NORFOLK OR CHICAGO?
Do you have your registration and hotel reservations for the July 6-7, 2018 Sexy and Sassy Signing event in Norfolk? If you're going, don't delay doing that, because the hotel block is already sold out, which means the hotel can choose not to offer the conference rate to new bookings at any time! Go to the site link NOW to make your reservations. You can find out who else is going--more authors are being added all the time--and what types of events are happening, including the public signing. I'd love to see you all there! There's also an anthology for sale from some of the participating authors, the proceeds of which are benefitting VETSports.
And though my second conference of the year, the RWA Chicago Spring Fling (April 20-21), is an author industry event, there is a public signing, so if you're in the area, plan on coming to see us all there. If you're attending the conference, I'll be hosting the Hot Night Critiques event! I'm also collecting premium swag for 75 attendee bags, so contact me at storywitch@PROTECTED if you're an author who'd like to send books or items for those (you don't have to be an attendee).
BDSM WRITERS CON (for READERS too!) - Don't forget, if you're a reader merely curious about the BDSM world in our books, or someone seeking more personal or professional information, the BDSM Writers Conference is geared toward providing that glimpse into the BDSM world for both readers and authors. While the conference is too far afield for me right now with all our other life changes, I continue to promote it each year because it made such a great impression on me the year I attended. They offer one in Seattle, WA (March 22-25 - coming up soon!) and one in NYC (Aug 16-18). This event is a great resource for providing a deeper and even more delightful understanding of this world. Even better, the key note in Seattle is Roni Loren, and in NYC, it will be our beloved Angela Knight!
ARCANE SHOT SERIES - I've almost completed my re-review of Something About Witches and In the Company of Witches, the two books of the Arcane Shot series whose rights were returned to me by the publisher last year. Our intent is to re-release those two books as self-published works in the next month or so. I'll announce it when it happens!
AUDIO - Every month, I have readers asking if the Vampire Queen series or Books 2 and 3 of the Knights of the Board Room series will ever be offered in audio (Nightfall is currently the only VQS book available in audio, a standalone offering from Desiree Holt and me). I'm so grateful for your continuing interest! I have recently sent in my annual appeal to the publisher for the rights back on these books, particularly the audio rights. I asked last year as well, and that was when they kindly returned the rights for the Daughters of Arianne trilogy, the two Arcane Shot books, and two of the Vampire Queen series (Vampire Instinct and Bound by the Vampire Queen). So hopefully, this year I will get back the rest, or at least some more of them. For there to be any interest from the audio publisher about my vampires, I need the earlier books back, so we'll see. Fingers crossed and think good thoughts! Of course, if our wishes come true, I'll be scrambling to review the books and get them re-released asap as self-pubs, so it could become an even busier year, very quickly. But I'm okay with that!
CONTACTING ME - Remember, you can find me online through my website email contact link or email me directly at storywitch@PROTECTED. You can also leave a question for me under my Author Profile on GoodReads. I'm on Facebook under Joey W. Hill, and @JoeyWHill on Twitter. My Pinterest boards related to the books are here.
Thank you all so much for your support of my work!
DIDN'T GET A RESPONSE? It seems those darn online filters are becoming more and more aggressive. And don't get me started on the many ways Facebook plays tricks with my messages, lol. But responding to my readers, and doing so in a very timely manner (within 24-48 hours), is extremely important to me. So if you have sent a communication to me in any of the mediums I've mentioned - direct email, FB, GoodReads or Twitter - and have not received a response, a technical glitch has occurred. Either your communication did not get through to me, or my response did not reach you. If you suspect that's the case, use one of the alternative communication methods to send me a "Hey, Joey, I sent you a note through email (or FB, or a tweet, etc). Did you get it?" message, and we'll make sure we sort it out. I will never intentionally ignore my readers!
While you can subscribe to the newsletter through my website, you may find your email host isn't letting it through, thanks to broad spam-blocking mechanisms that don't separate communications you've specifically requested to receive from those you haven't. Regrettably, there's not a lot we can do on this side if the newsletter is hitting an email filter that is bouncing it without notifying either one of us. However, we do have some things you can try that seem to have worked for folks:
FIRST - make sure the newsletter email is part of your contact list: "newsletter@PROTECTED."
SECOND - Check whatever filters you do have for spam and the like and see what methods are available to you to ensure an email like this gets through. My newsletters have a plethora of links in them to make it easy for you to find the things I'm talking about, but the flip side of that is it can get the newsletter tagged pretty quickly as spam.
THIRD - Contact me at newsletter@PROTECTED and ask to be unsubscribed. Once we confirm with you that has been done, rather than us sending you an invitation (which can bounce for the aforementioned reasons), we have you go in to the website newsletter link and subscribe yourself - here's the link to that. If it works, you'll get an automatic invitation to confirm, and then, fingers crossed, you should be set.
FOURTH - If none of this works or all of it is just too frustrating and you want to say "screw it!" (and I can hardly blame you, lol), then just make sure you've liked my FB page or are following me on Twitter. This is because EVERY MONTH I will post the latest newsletter link on both of those, to make sure it reaches the widest number of people possible! It's the same link monthly, so if you want, just put http://storywitch.com/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/archive/storywitchnews/newest/ as one of your Favorites. You can click on it anytime to see if an update has been posted. I post a new one every 30-45 days, give or take a few days.
