MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A VIGNETTE FOR ALL MY READERS!
It's the festive season of giving! If you glance toward the sidebar, you'll see I have a variety of online events happening this month, and there will be giveaways at all of them, offered by me and others! However, as many of you know, my favorite gift to give during the holidays, when my insane schedule allows (aka I don't squander too much time weeping over favorite Christmas movies and doing endless home holiday decorating), is a CHRISTMAS VIGNETTE involving my existing characters or set in one of my series worlds. I'm happy to report this is one of the years I'll be able to offer that!
So your next question is WHO--right? Over the years, you all have given me a multitude of ideas for the slice-of-life stories that become official vignettes. The way I choose the next one is a lot like a Ouija board. I open up my MS Notes file and scan through the suggestions until I feel the "pull" that tells me THIS is the next vignette. This year, it's a lovely coincidence that the idea that caught my attention is one that many of you have mentioned wanting to read.
For those of you who have read Vampire Trinity or tuned into the "Guess his father" contest a few years back, you know the vampire assassin Daegan Rei has an intriguing parentage. His mother is a vampire and his father is the angel Lucifer. Yes, THAT Lucifer, the one who handles Hell and everything associated with it. If you've read my mermaids and angels, you've met him in the Daughters of Arianne series (wink).
Revealing the identify of Daegan's father in that contest led readers to ask the inevitable question - how in the heck did Lucifer and a female vampire end up getting together? Well, that question will be answered in THE YULE GIFT, a free Christmas novella set in the Vampire Queen series world.
I hope we'll have it out on or before Christmas, or as close to it as possible. The story is set in medieval Europe during the Plague, so it was a time when the hope and faith of the Yule season was desperately needed! When it goes live, I'll holler about it on FB, Twitter and at the Fan Forum, as always.
DO YOU HAVE YOUR COPY OF NIGHT'S TEMPLAR?
Readers have been responding SO enthusiastically to Uthe and Keldwyn's story - thank you! Night's Templar came out October 31, and marked the 13th book in the Vampire Queen series. If you've not yet picked up your copy, the BUY LINKS are on the Night's Templar book page.
If you haven't yet tried the Vampire Queen series, it's a great time to do so. Click on that series link to check out excerpts and descriptions of each book, including which ones can be read as standalones. We're still working on convincing the publisher to reduce the ebook prices to at least the price of a mass market paperback ($7.99), but they've at least done that on the first four in the series, as well as some of the others, and the self pub titles (Scientific Method, Elusive Hero and Night's Templar) are in the $2.99-$4.99 range).
NAUGHTY WISHES ARE COMING...
Naughty Wishes aren't just a Christmas thing! (grin) Go check out my celebrity vision of the Naughty Wishes characters on Pinterest. Want a bigger sneak peek than the excerpt that's already on my website and the Pinterest link? There's a second excerpt on the JWH Connection fan forum under the Excerpts section. Pre-Order links are on my website. As you can see from the sidebar under UPCOMING/CURRENT RELEASES, Naughty Wishes will release as a four-novella serial, one per month, just as Naughty Bits did, and that happens January through April 2016. YES, Madison and Logan from Naughty Bits will make a key appearance in these books. Also, just like with Naughty Bits, if the sales of the novellas do well, the publisher will likely offer a compilation ebook and print version of Naughty Wishes about a year from the serial release.
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON NOW?
Worth the Wait! There's never been a more appropriate title for a book. After several false starts over the years, Julie's hero has finally appeared, so the next book I'll be writing will be her story. Julie is Marcus and Thomas's friend in Rough Canvas.
Since I'm not officially working on this book until January, I'm just playing with it right now, but the muse has been feeding me so many exciting glimpses, I'm doing something I haven't done in some time - I'm handwriting scenes in a little notebook I'm carrying around the house with me. My arthritic hands and tighter writing deadlines have made handwriting my first drafts less possible over the years, but it's still one of my preferred ways to write a first draft. I get more in touch with the flow of the story that way, so being able to do that with the initial scenes of Julie's book is making me even more enthusiastic about her love story with eccentric roofer and all-round Dom, Desmond Hayes. Starting in January, I hope to feed you a few teaser tidbits as we go along...
BITS AND PIECES...
Christmas Cheer - The Smutketeers blog ladies often put out a delightful musical Christmas video featuring authors and readers. Though they didn't have a chance to do one this year, I think the past ones are just as much fun to revisit. Click here for the one they did in 2013, for your holiday pleasure! (Scroll down the blog post to the video and press play.)
Conference News - Remember my one con appearance this year will be at Authors After Dark in Savannah, GA, August 3-9. Registration is now open! This will be the last year for this lovely con, and they're retruning to the more informal format that launched its success, so I'm looking forward to having even more facetime with readers and sharing an enjoyable time in lovely Savannah with you all.
Also, while I won't be at the two 2016 BDSM Writers' Conferences (for both READERS and writers)--one in Everett, Washington and one in NYC, NY--this is an outstanding con to attend as a reader merely curious about the BDSM world you've read about, or as an author wanting to expand his/her knowledge. You can find out more by visiting here. They have a great lineup of vendors, workshops and hands-on experiences in both venues. Tiffany Reisz will be the keynote in Washington, and Sierra Cartwright in NY!
If a day trip to discover new authors is more your thing, then take a look at the Sexy and Sassy Signing event in Norfolk, Virginia in July 2016! (Look in the sidebar of that link to find Facebook page and more info for event.)
AWARDS AND ACCOLADES
SOUL REST and NIGHT'S TEMPLAR are Golden Flogger Award Finalists! Thank you so much to all those who supported their nomination. Here's the list of all the wonderful nominees - I'm very proud to see my work in this talented company!
NIGHT'S TEMPLAR - Every time I have a book release, I wait with held breath and chewed fingernails until I hear that a) my existing readers feel I've lived up to their expectations for my stories and b) new readers are discovering and enjoying the title (when the book can standalone). This note from a reader has become a forever keeper:
"I do [my daily walking regimen in my house] because I know my house well enough to walk while reading on my Kindle. I've been doing this for some time and have actually become quite proficient at it and have increased my speed exponentially. I couldn't wait to read Night's Templar and given that my family leaves me be while I'm doing my 'miles', I just knew I'd have that 'alone' time I crave when I read your books. However.....Only two chapters in and I had slammed one of my hands as I rounded the kitchen table, stubbed my toe on the kitchen island, bruised my thigh on the arm of the couch and damn near broke my nose walking into the bloody doorway opening to my living room. This is when I realized that you are the only author I can NOT read while I walk. I become too engrossed in the story and LITERALLY walk into walls!"
I also worry about my series becoming stale, one book sounding too much like the last one. Which meant this reader reassured me on that point greatly! "One of the problems that occur in long running book series are that the storylines, characters and plots can start to become too familiar. Just insert character A into scene B and tie it all up with C’s ending. Not necessarily a bad thing if the writing is good, but sticking to what’s worked in the past can ultimately lead to a slow death for the series as a whole. This is most definitely NOT the case with Joey W Hill’s latest book in her Vampire Queen series. Book 13 “Night’s Templar” is a revelation. Ms. Hill has taken the world she’s so beautifully created in Books 1-12 and expanded and enriched it tenfold. Weaving in historical fact, legend and her own myths regarding the Knight Templars elevates this story to what is best in all great fiction. Immaculate storytelling."
The reviews on Amazon, B&N and Goodreads have been so lovely, and the official reviewers have been equally kind. I wish I had room to credit them all, because I deeply appreciate any of you who take time to share positive feedback on my work with others, but here are a few snippets...
From Books n Cozy Spots - "Night’s Templar is quintessentially Vampire Queen, but the brilliant blend of the real, the legendary and the imagined takes this story to a new plane. Kudos for an exceptional, next-level read."
From Love Bytes: "This book is amazing. It’s a great addition to this series...If you have read any or all of the other books, you have soooooo got to read this one."
Boy Meets Boy Reviews - "Joey is a favorite of mine but when I realized this was her first M/M book in 3.67 KAGRILLION years (or since 2007 but who's counting?) dogs covered their ears. And in my favorite series too!!!! If you're not familiar with Joey's writing, she has an affinity for the English language and uses it to the best of her abilities to draw the reader into her worlds."

Because many email filters now bounce the newsletter, I'm going to make this a permanent part of the newsletter for awhile to help as many people as possible gain access to it. Regrettably, there's not a lot we can do on this side if the newsletter is hitting an email filter that is bouncing it without notifying either one of us. However, we do have some things you can try that seem to have worked for folks:
FIRST - make sure the newsletter email is part of your contact list: "newsletter@PROTECTED."
SECOND - Check whatever filters you do have for spam and the like and see what methods are available to you to ensure an email like this gets through. My newsletters have a plethora of links in them to make it easy for you to find the things I'm talking about, but the flip side of that is it can get the newsletter tagged pretty quickly as spam.
THIRD - Contact me at newsletter@PROTECTED and ask to be unsubscribed. Once we confirm with you that has been done, rather than us sending you an invitation (which can bounce for the aforementioned reasons), we have you go in to the website newsletter link and subscribe yourself - here's the link to that. If it works, you'll get an automatic invitation to confirm, and then, fingers crossed, you should be set.
FOURTH - If none of this works or all of it is just too frustrating and you want to say "screw it!" (and I can hardly blame you, lol), then just make sure you've liked my FB page or are following me on Twitter, or are a member of the JWH Connection fan forum. This is because EVERY MONTH I will post the latest newsletter link on all three of those, to make sure it reaches the widest number of people possible! It's the same link monthly, so if you want, just put http://storywitch.com/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/archive/storywitchnews/newest/ as one of your Favorites.
